UX/UI design interviews can be tricky and questions asked can often take you for a roller coaster ride. Let's go through some of these interview questions and take a look at how we can answer the trickiest of questions with confidence.

#1 Tell us about your journey

  1. Tell them about how you got into design. Make sure you highlight your passion for designing and who inspires you. Share your early lessons and experiences as a beginner or a professional. This could also include courses you took or the on-the-job lessons that helped you grow.

  2. Make sure you mention any achievements and accolades. If you have any awards or certificates, you can share those with your interviewer in order to establish credibility.

  3. Share other skills other than design. Design managers want someone unique and with a special set of personality and skills. Even skills like 3D design, photography, music or any other creative passion you have.

  4. Make your intro short and sweet. Nobody likes someone who keeps on talking non-stop.

#2 Walk us through your design process

  1. Don’t mention the standard design process, but share your own style of problem solving and share lean methods to help the company. It will be important to know the standard double-diamond design method, however knowing what the business or client truly wants can make your process more flexible.

  2. Tell them how you will communicate with teams and manage projects. Since a company has multiple designers, if the company knows that you are a team player and know how to delegate work can be a huge plus point.

  3. Mention any crucial challenges you faced in your previous companies or any team activity. Also share important solutions provided at the time.

#3 Have you seen our product, how will you improve it?

  1. Research their product and highlight the positive and negatives. Make sure that you do your due research about the company before you go into the interview.

  2. Give them a few ideas based on your expertise and add a new perspective. Make sure you mention your special skills that you can apply to their process.

  3. Keep some ideas a secret ;)

#4 The whiteboard/design round

  1. Companies might ask you to create something or solve a problem as a test (1-2 hours long).

  2. You can focus on any single aspect of UX design as long as you can showcase your skills and knowledge well.

  3. Balance your digital design work during this exercise with notes and research done on sheets or the whiteboard.

  4. Your interviewee

#5 Do you have any questions for us?

  1. Recruiters can be impressed by the questions you ask. Ask about how their team collaborates, if they have any learning programs to grow as a designer, whether you can bring other skills to the table.

  2. Always end with “looking forward to working with you!”
