Everything from iOS 18 to Apple's own AI, there is a lot to unfold from the annual Apple WWDC conference 2024. Thousands of developers came together at the Apple Park in California to learn about what's new and what is coming soon!

Apple Intelligence - Apple's Own Artificial Intelligence

Apple has been working on their own A.I. model, which has been trained in house with their own data. They are bringing Apple Intelligence to almost all of their devices including the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and more. They haven't done this alone, since they have had some help from OpenAI, where Apple will send complex AI tasks or questions over to ChatGPT for a better user experience and better results.

Now, here are the cool things Apple Intelligence can do:

  1. Create and generate custom emojis for iMessage users. This feature is called Genmoji.

  2. Organise and take action on notifications based on their importance and priority. AI can also add custom events, set reminders, and organise information on your devices soon.

  3. Apple Intelligence will also be able to write and summarize text, emails, messages, and even re-write text to fit situations better.

  4. It will also allow you to generate custom illustrations, graphics, and images based on prompts or photos of yourself or someone else.

  5. Advanced image editing is here - like removing unwanted people from your photos, adding or moving objects.

  6. AI is also there in the iPad calculator, so Ai will help you solve equations and problems, while understanding real human handwriting.

  7. Siri will now be powered by Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT as well.

You might wonder if this makes the iPhone less secure or if Apple will read our private data. The answer is, it is pretty secure! Apple's own AI will be powered by its own data centres powered by Apple M4 chips, so your data will still be end-to-end encrypted. ChatGPT will also only have access to some of your prompts and not any of your data.

PS. Apple Intelligence will only come to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, iPads with M1 or newer, and Macs with M1 chip or newer.

iPhone Customisation - Finally!

With the release of iOS 18, we will get a lot of new customisation features that people were waiting for, for years.

  1. You can place app icons and widgets in any part of the home screen, instead of having to follow a fixed grid like earlier. So, freedom to place what you like and where you like it, is finally here.

  2. Icon and widget customisation is very interesting. You can change the theme of the app icons and widgets to fit the same color as your wallpaper or any other custom color. Unfortunately, not all your app icons will look as good as the official Apple apps.

  3. You can customise the control center, and even add widgets to custom pages inside your control center. This will be super helpful to get to your widgets and apps faster.

  4. You will now be able to customise emojis inside the iMessage reactions. Add or remove emojis from the list at any time.

  5. Hiding apps are now possible. Each app can be sent to a custom locked folder in your app drawer, which can then be accessed with your passcode.

  6. You can now change the lock screen shortcuts from the original camera and flashlight to any app or shortcut of your choice.

  7. Dark and light mode can now change the look of your wallpapers, icons and widgets.

MacOS Sequoia - Much Needed Updates

The next MacOS is called Sequoia and brings a slew of changes that will use the Apple Silicon much better as well as bring the Apple ecosystem closer.

  1. The MacOS apps now have Apple Intelligence powered features. For example, you can now summarize documents or books, get focused information from webpages on Safari, create sketches o images with AI, and also better Siri support.

  2. Apple is brining better continuity to the iPhone and Mac. You can now open your iPhone interface on the Mac or Macbook, and this allows you to access your iPhone's apps, notifications, functions, and even shift files from your Mac to iPhone and vice-versa.

  3. You will now have better organisation of windows with better window tiling. You can drag and drop different windows into different corners of the screen and they adjust accordingly.

  4. With Present Preview and Background replacements for the webcam, you can now replace your backgrounds with custom images in any app, and also see what other people will see before you share your screen with everyone.

  5. You now have a dedicated passwords app where you can organise and secure your passwords for different apps and websites.
